The PJ-Herbal Clinic

Given my background and area of specialization, one might well wonder what a behavioral psychologist is even doing "in this neighborhood". According to some, we are supposed to believe that everything can be handled with the correct combination of positive and negative behavioral consequences. If that is correct, why would one need any help from an herbal supplement?

I certainly won't pretend to speak for all behavioral psychologists, but for me, the answer is simple. Herbal supplements may at times be needed for the same reason that I put my eyeglasses on when I get up in the morning. Both are tools that can compensate for current problems in a nervous system function.

Neither is probably an "absolute" necessity. (My eyeglasses, I suppose, could be avoided if I were willing to sit really close to things and give up the idea of driving a car).

I could do the above to avoid my eyeglasses, but of course I wouldn't. Eyeglasses, when needed, and herbal supplements, when needed, can enable an increased capability to maintain "focus".

Second, and very important, is that I neither can, nor should tell you to try any specific herbal supplement. Our bodies do not have identical reactions to foods or to medications, so it is no surprise that this holds true for herbal supplements as well. There are situations, particularly when you are using certain prescribed medications, in which a trial of an herbal supplement is probably not a good idea.

Only you and your personal health care provider can decide what is best for you. Links and related clinical information included here are intended to provide information to help in making the decision.
